Beyond the Pulpit 2.9.25
Good Morning Crozet UMC!
This past week I was literally FAR beyond the pulpit! I was invited by our local IMPACT Charlottesville ministry, as well as the Bishop, to attend a justice ministry conference for clergy in Orlando, FL. Believe me, whoever scheduled it to be in Florida in February was brilliant! Though I was in a hotel ballroom for much of the time, it was sunny and 81 degrees in Florida! I joined United Methodist clergy from across Virginia (see photo!) and beyond, as well as clergy of different denominations and different faith traditions from all over the country. The biblical teaching and preaching was so inspiring…challenging us all to serve others not only through acts of service but also by working together to bring long-term change by addressing systems of oppression. Over and over again, we were urged to start by connecting with our community, which CUMC is already doing in many ways!

On Sunday, February 23 at 12:15pm, you’re all invited to join me after worship to hear about how some of our CUMC folks are working on justice issues in our community. We’ll gather after the 11am service and share the concerns we’re focusing on this year as well as opportunities for you to plug in and support these efforts. Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have questions or wish to meet in person for further discussion.
As your pastor, one thing I am led to do is keep you informed about how our denomination engages with the world.
Last week I shared Virginia Conference Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson’s letter to the people of Virginia regarding the uncertainty, fear, anger, anxiety, and the sense of being overwhelmed in light of the many executive orders that have been issued in recent weeks. I know of people connected with our own congregation who are directly affected by these orders. I’m certain you may know of persons who are affected as well.
This week, I want you to be aware that the Council of Bishops of the UMC (that’s ALL active and retired bishops in the UMC from around the world) sent the following letter to President Trump regarding the Administration’s Executive Order to suspend all U.S. foreign assistance programs and subsequent Work Stop Order issued by the Department of State.
Being a part of a global denomination has its pros and cons. But mostly I believe one of the most significant benefits is that together we can serve more people around the world, especially in the areas of disaster relief. And I believe it’s important to be aware of how our denominational leaders are modeling the way of discipleship in the world today.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
